FAQ's Have Questions?

Is the test painful?

Discomfort varies from person to person and depends on which donation method is used.

As a peripheral blood stem cell (PBSC) donor, you may experience headaches or body aches. But these subside shortly after your non-surgical donation.

As a marrow donor, you may experience back pain, fatigue, headache or bruising for a few days or weeks after surgery.

How long does the process take?

Upon receiving the package, simply swab your mouth and then send it back using the provided return envelope.

What happens if I'm a match?

A representative from our office will reach out to discuss the potential match and guide you through the subsequent steps based on the patient's needs.

Am I eligible to join the registry?

You can join the Be The Match Registry® if you're:

Between the ages of 18 and 40

A resident of the United States or Puerto Rico

Able to meet our health guidelines

What’s donation like?

90% of the time:

Peripheral blood stem cell (PBSC) donation

Similar to donating plasmaNon-surgical process

10% of the time: marrow donation

You’re under anesthesia

Liquid marrow is drawn from the pelvic bone

Are there any risks?

There are very few risks in our donation process. And while no medical procedure is completely risk-free, every precaution is taken to ensure the safety and well-being of every donor.
